Nikola Tesla's birthday

Nikola TeslaToday is birthday of a great inventor and electrical engineer - Nikola Tesla. He was born in 1856 and died in 1943. Nikola is best known for the invention of alternating current (electrical current that alternates its flowing direction, instead of flowing just one way). Using AC (alternating current) electricity allows transferring electrical energy over much greater distances, and basically you can say that Tesla lit the world. Follow this link to find out more about electricity.

Another great invention is electromagnetic motor. You can find these everywhere, in toy cars, in various instruments, trains and even your toothbrush might have one. Electromagnetic motor is one of those rare inventions that is twofold: if you apply electricity to it, it starts rotating, but if you rotate it, it generates electricity. So Tesla is also an inventor of electrical generator, also known as dynamo.

Amongst other great inventions, Tesla is also accounted as inventor of radio, although he did not build one, he described and designed mechanisms that became prototypes of a modern radio transmitter.
