First maps of the Moon were created by an Englishman Thomas Harriot. Most people probably never heard of him. It is believed that Galileo was first to create detailed drawings of the sky and its objects.
Fact is, Thomas Harriot created detailed maps of the Moon four months before Galileo did. He just never published them and so all the fame went to Galileo.
These maps are currently owned by Lord Egremont. Copies of those maps are available for viewing at the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester.
Science Museum in London is starting a new exhibition 'Cosmos and Culture: How astronomy shaped our world' on 23 of July, where you can find Thomas Harriot's drawings of the Moon, Jupiter's satellites and sunsports.
