monopoly1The classic board game Monopoly was invented in 1935. Exactly 79 years ago.

Players move around the game board buying or trading properties, developing their properties with houses and hotels, and collecting rent from their opponents, the ultimate goal being to drive them into bankruptcy.

EnglandopolyA new wave of licensed products began in 1994, when Hasbro granted a license to USAopoly to begin publishing a San Diego Edition of Monopoly, which has since been followed by over 100 more.

Starting in the UK in 2005, an updated version of the game, titled Monopoly Here and Now, was produced, replacing game scenarios, properties, and tokens with modern equivalents. Similar boards were produced for Germany and France.

Besides the many variants of the actual game released in either video game or computer game formats two spin-off computer games have been created.

monopoly3Hasbro conducts a worldwide Monopoly tournament. The first Monopoly World Championships took place in Grossinger’s Resort in New York, in November 1973, but it wasn’t until 1975 that they included competitors from outside the United States.
