Nelson Mandela

nelson mandelaNelson Mandela was born 1918. He fought against the rule of South Africa’s white leaders in the 1950s and 1960s. After 29 years in jail, he transformed from a prisoner into to a first black President. The South African people voted for him to become their leader. Nelson Mandela focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation.

Mandela died of a lung infection on 5 December 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 95.

Many artists have dedicated songs to Mandela. One of the most popular was from The Special AKA who recorded the song “Free Nelson Mandela” in 1983, which Elvis Costello also recorded and had a hit with. Mandela has been depicted in cinema and television on multiple occasions. He is portrayed by Idris Elba in the 2013 film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
