Building a water rocket

Rocket modelAlways wanted to build a rocket, but were afraid to use all the stuff that burns or explodes? Apparently you don't need to! All that's required is some water. Plastic bottle, which is also easy to find, is filled with water. Then pressurised air pushes the water out through the rocket nozzle and provides thrust for the rocket.
Detailed plans and video of the flying rockets including from the camera mounted on one of the rockets can be found on this web site.
You will of course need an air pressure device (air pump), which is a bit harder to find, to build up the air pressure up to 120psi that is required to push the water out of the bottle. You can get those from either a DIY store such as B&Q or online for around £10-20.

Perseids - spectacular meteor show

MeteorEarth is going to pass through the stream of debris from Swift-Tuttle comet. Earth goes through this stream every year, and when it does we are able to observe quite a spectacular meteor show. The peak this year is scheduled 11th and 12th of August, so make sure you do not miss it! Here's what NASA suggests for the best observation:

"Unfold a blanket on a flat patch of ground. (Note: The middle of your street is not a good choice.) Lie down and look up. Perseids can appear in any part of the sky, their tails all pointing back to the shower's radiant in the constellation Perseus. Get away from city lights if you can."

In Britain the best place to observe the meteors is south-east which will not be covered much in clouds according to MET.

Henry VIII's Coronation Weekend

King Henry VIIIOn Saturday 20 June 2009, we will mark the 500th anniversary of King Henry VIII’s coronation (24 June 1509) with a magnificent Tudor river pageant sailing from the Tower of London along the River Thames to the King’s favourite surviving royal residence, Hampton Court Palace.
At 10am, King Henry VIII and his Queen will board the Royal Shallop 'Jubilant' at the Tower of London. Accompanied by a flotilla of traditional skiffs, the King and his entourage will then travel up the River Thames with more boats joining the procession at Richmond for the final leg of the journey to Hampton Court Palace.

King Henry’s loyal subjects are invited to line the banks of the river between central London through Richmond and down to Hampton Court Palace, cheering the King and Queen and their splendid entourage as they pass by on their journey.

Meanwhile at Hampton Court Palace, preparations will be underway in anticipation of their arrival at around 3pm. Visitors will be able to see the Tudor cooks hard at work in Henry VIII’s Kitchens preparing the King's feast, which will be served to the royal party in the palace’s famous gardens followed by music, dancing and entertainment from the King’s fools. You can buy picnic items at Hampton Court Palace or bring your own refreshments to enjoy the festivities in the gardens with the King. So get ready to party, Tudor style!

Slippery Snake's travel around Great Britain

Our hiking bootsSlippery Snake has recently returned from over 2.5 weeks journey around the Great Britain. Most of the time was spent in Wales and Scotland. It will take some time, but detail report will follow and those who dare will be able to follow our steps. It wasn't a leisure trip, we aimed to see a lot and do a lot, which I think we have achieved quite well, only removing few items from the original plan. Those who followed us on Twitter know that we had few adventurous moments as well, such as holding our tent in win gusts exceeding 60 km/h, etc. (we had to throw the tent away on our last day as it completelly broke and apparently those specific flexible poles are not on sale anymore).

Read on for further statistics of the journey and the map.

Apollo 11 40 years anniversary

Apollo 1140 years ago Apollo-11 approached the Moon and it's lunar module (called "Eagle") landed on the Moon's surface. First step on the Moon has been made by astronaut Neil Armstrong. His words entered the history: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent 2.5 hours on the Moon and collected over 20kg of Moon rock samples. On the way back to lunar module, astronauts accidentally broke an engine switch and had to use felt-tip pen to fix it. Three days later (July 24th) astronauts returned back to Earth.
Happy anniversary Apollo 11!

Nikola Tesla's birthday

Nikola TeslaToday is birthday of a great inventor and electrical engineer - Nikola Tesla. He was born in 1856 and died in 1943. Nikola is best known for the invention of alternating current (electrical current that alternates its flowing direction, instead of flowing just one way). Using AC (alternating current) electricity allows transferring electrical energy over much greater distances, and basically you can say that Tesla lit the world. Follow this link to find out more about electricity.

Another great invention is electromagnetic motor. You can find these everywhere, in toy cars, in various instruments, trains and even your toothbrush might have one. Electromagnetic motor is one of those rare inventions that is twofold: if you apply electricity to it, it starts rotating, but if you rotate it, it generates electricity. So Tesla is also an inventor of electrical generator, also known as dynamo.

Amongst other great inventions, Tesla is also accounted as inventor of radio, although he did not build one, he described and designed mechanisms that became prototypes of a modern radio transmitter.
